Religion? Gone. (Jon Quitt)

July 30, 2008

R.E.M. wrote a great song in the 90’s, Losing your religion. Isn’t that a great aspiration? In this talk, Jon candidly talks about pursuing a relationship with Jesus.

Pastor
jon@tuscaloosavineyard.com

Jon has been the pastor since the church started in 2002. He and Amy served in youth and college ministry for 7 years before being introduced to the Vineyard. Jon and Amy interned under Bubba Justice at the Inverness Vineyard Church in Birmingham for 2 years before starting a small group in Tuscaloosa. After several months of meeting as a small group, the decision was made to go public as a Vineyard church plant. Jon graduated from the University of Alabama with a BA in Criminal Justice. Amy graduated from the University of Alabama with an undergraduate degree in Speech Language Pathology, and received her Masters degree in Speech Language Pathology from the University of South Alabama. Amy works at the University of Alabama overseeing Speech Therapy graduate students. They have two children, Connor (5) and Sydney (3) who are involved in the children’s ministry at VCC.

Our Story

Our Story

When people think of a new church, they think pragmatically. Get some chairs, a sound system, a preacher and some guy (or lady) to lead some music…and there you go. You’ve gotta church! However, that is not how the Vineyard happened. The Vineyard Community Church was never created. It was not manufactured out of some entrepreneural skill, creativity or desire to succeed. The Vineyard was conceived out of a burning desire to see the name and renown of Jesus be experienced by all people.
It all started in 2002 with a handful of people that met in a house to worship and pray for each other. It was nothing fancy; no light show or big band or someone standing at a podium. What we did have was something that most of us had not experienced . . . community and truth and God’s presence. We wanted more though and wanted others to experience this reality also. So that same year we secured the Ferguson Center Theatre on the University of Alabama campus to hold our first public service of the Vineyard Community Church.
Since those early days, three + years ago, we are still pursuing God in all that He is. We still love to worship Him and communicate to people that Jesus is head over heals in love with them.

Beliefs and Values

Beliefs

We believe that there is one Living and True God, eternally existing in three persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, equal in power and glory; and that this triune God created all, upholds all and governs all.
We believe that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament are the Word of God, fully inspired, without error in the original manuscripts, and the infallible rule of faith and practice.
We believe in God the Father, an infinite, personal Spirit, perfect in holiness, wisdom, power and love; that He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of men; that He hears and answers prayer; and that He saves from sin and death all who come to Him through Jesus Christ.
We believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only begotten Son, conceived by the Holy Spirit. We believe in His virgin birth, sinless life, miracles and teaching, His substitutionary atoning death, bodily resurrection, ascension into heaven, perpetual intercession for His people and personal visible return to earth. We believe that in His first coming Jesus inaugurated the fulfillment of the Kingdom of God.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, Who came forth from the Father and Son to convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment, and to regenerate, sanctify and empower for ministry all who believe in Christ; we believe the Holy Spirit dwells in every believer in Jesus Christ and that He is an abiding Helper, Teacher, and Guide. We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit and in the exercise of all the Biblical gifts of the Spirit.
We believe that all men are sinners by nature and choice and are therefore under condemnation; and that God regenerates and baptizes by the Holy Spirit those who repent of their sins and confess Jesus Christ as Lord.
We believe in the universal Church, the living spiritual body, of which Christ is the Head and all regenerated persons are members.
We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ committed two ordinances to the church: Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. We believe in water baptism and communion open to all believers.
We believe also in the laying on of hands for the empowering of the Holy Spirit, for ordination of pastors, elders and deacons, for receiving gifts of the Spirit, and for healing.
We believe in the personal, visible appearing of Christ to each believer and the consummation of His Kingdom, in the resurrection of the body, the final judgment and eternal blessing of the righteous, and endless suffering of the wicked.
We believe in what is termed The Apostle’s Creed as embodying fundamental facts of the Christian faith and endorse the historic orthodox creeds of the Church.
Values

These are the tenants of our body. Though at times we may focus more on one than another, they are all foundational to our local body.
We value intimate Worship.
We value Relationships (small groups, fellowship, discipleship).
We value the Poor (those in need).
We value Prayer (intercession).
We value Outreach (evangelism, servant-outreach).
We value the Bible (teaching and memorizing).
We value Mentoring others into Full Time Christian Service .

Outreach Team

Serving the Tuscaloosa/Northport community by showing Gods love in a pratical way. We are involved weekly in bringing the church to the streets. We give away free stuff like lightbulbs, newspapers, hot chocolate, cokes. We also visit retirement communities and bless the residents. It’s small but it’s amazing the doors the Holy Spirit will open through just giving something free to someone… The only way this happens effectively every week is if we have a strong team effort. If you would like to get in on an outreach contact us…

Prayer

July 5, 2008

There is a reason why we are instructed to “pray without ceasing.” We are in a love relationship with God and He yearns for us to be in continual communication with Him. As in any relationship, an open door of communication facilitates growth and intimacy. Through prayer we “let our requests be made known to God” and willingly submit our lives to God’s agenda. Prayer is the vessel through which we listen for God’s voice, pour out praises upon our Savior, and release our faith.

Here at the Vineyard, we believe that there is power in prayer. We cherish the authority which Christ has given us as believers through our prayers. Further, we believe that the prayers of a righteous person “are powerful and effective” and able to bring healing, stop the attack of the enemy, offer prophetic insight, cast out demons, and move the heart of God through our intercession.

On the basis of James 5:13-16, we set aside time for personal ministry at the end of our worship services. During this time, members of our trained ministry team will pray for anyone who is sick or in need. Just as Christ continually intercedes on our behalf, we want to be a community of faith that joins Him in making intercession for the needs of others.
We also pray during the week on Tuesday nights at 6:00 pm and Sunday mornings at 9:30 am.
