Jesus and Virginia Tech (Jon Quitt)

April 30, 2007

What can we say to describe the events of April 16th, 2007? This event will certainly shape us as a people for years to come, much the way 911 has. Of course we are asking questions like, ‘Who is this Cho?” and “Why didn’t the police have this under control?” and “Who is to blame ultimately?”. But more than any of those questions we are asking questions about God and his purposes. How could a God that is supposedly so good allow something so bad to happen? In this talk Jon walks through some of the questions that we struggle with when tragedy strikes and how we can embrace God’s purposes in the face of suffering.

Night of Worship

April 30, 2007

Last night I was uncomfortable! Uncomfortable is actually an understatement. Typically, in a service, I am the one setting the pace for worship–hands raised, bowing and even shouting is the norm. However, last night worship was through the roof. People were dancing, weeping (loudly) and spinning around in worship. My comfort level was assaulted with the reckless abandon of many of the college students around me. Not long after this personal crisis that seemed to last for hours (actually just seconds) God seemed to speak to my heart of his desire for his people (namely me) to let loose and be willing to be undignified for his name’s sake.

Below is a live recording of one of my new favorite songs that we sang last night. Enjoy!

Old School Worship: Viva La Revolucion (Jon Quitt)

April 23, 2007

What does it mean for people to be mad before God in worship? It must mean that we lose control of all of our faculties–eyes rolled back and foaming at the mouth. Thankfully no! Madness before God in worship is a full body and life activity that causes us to be revolutionaries to a hurting and broken world. In this talk, Jon encourages us to let loose in our worship to God so that we might be more empowered to impart life to others.

That Thing You Do! (Jonathan Cook)

April 19, 2007

Why do you do the things that you do? If you are able to answer this question then you are one step closer to living the kind of life that Jesus described in John 10:10. Regardless of whether your choices are reactive or proactive, the greatest indicator of how you will respond can be found in your Perspective. In this message, Jonathan Cook explores the two ingredients that make up our Perspective and describes how to live a life of balanced Perspective.

Old School Worship: Loving God With Our Mind (Jon Quitt)

April 19, 2007

Jesus was an intellectual. He didn’t wear horned rimmed spectacles or a pocket protector, but we know he loved the mind. Jesus proclaimed boldly, “Love the Lord God with all your heart and your soul and your mind.” With that said, what does it look like to love God with our mind? In this talk, Jon encourages us to embrace the full dynamic of who God is. God is someone who calls us to engage him with our heart & mind.

When Hookers Get to Heaven…(Easter Sermon)

April 12, 2007

What would happen if Jesus went around forgiving people that didn’t deserve it? What would the religious crowd say if they heard Jesus tell a tax collector that he was forgiven? Or how about a hooker? They would be peeved to say the least…and they were! The message of Easter, we discover, is not just a message of putting the past behind us, but letting God forgive us.

Old School Worship: Embracing Simplicity (Jon Quitt)

April 12, 2007

When we think about worship, rarely do we think about shutting our mouths. Typically a worship experience might include a band, some singing and dependent on your church background, sensory overload. But we learn something from Jesus’ worship experience. Jesus created time in his life to be alone so that he could listen, learn and respond to the Father. In this talk, Jon encourages us to turn down the volume of our life so that we can hear God.

Old School Worship (Jon Quitt)

April 11, 2007

What’s the best way to worship? Hymns or choruses? Band or choir? What we discover through this talk is something that the rest of the church of Jesus has already discovered…worship is not synonymous with long guitar licks and raised hands. In fact, we can celebrate the goodness of Jesus in many different ways.
